Strawberry Lion Walk - May 12th 2024

Many thanks to all who took part in our Strawberry Lion Walk; we were blessed by the weather, just got a little wet picking up two weary stragglers who had been to Winscombe and back. They were pretty much on their knees but felt that they needed to do a long walk to justify their £250 collection in sponsorship receipts! One of the Brownie dads has raised £400 so we are hoping for a good result. Many thanks to great support from the Guiding Community.Over 60 walkers took part including two new charities, North Somerset People First which entered a team of 14 and "North Somerset Parent Carers Working Together" which was represented by Emily Rutland and Oscar, they live locally. Both groups are supporting young people with learning difficulties. It will take a few weeks to collect all sponsorship funds but fingers crossed that we have raised a good amount for Yatton Girlguiding who have supported us on every walk we've done so far.

The Challenge can be completed by either walking, running or cycling one of the designated routes:
● Yatton to Congresbury Fishing Lakes and return
● Yatton to Winscombe Millenium Green and return
● Yatton to Axbridge and return.

Yeo Valley Lions Club's annual 50/50 Sponsored Charity Walk takes place each year along the Strawberry Line from Yatton. There is a choice of three walks of 5, 13 or 20 miles in length. Walkers can retain half of the funds they raise to donate to an organisation or charity of their choice and pass half to Yeo Valley Lions Club who nominate a different charity that they will support each year.

The last year it was held was in 2022, it was decided to support Yatton Girlguiding, who themselves have actively participated in the walk for many years. In view of recent events the Guides themselves instead kindly suggested that the funds raised by the 2022 walk should go to the Lions Clubs International Foundation which is supporting the work being done for refugees by Lions Clubs in the countries bordering Ukraine.

We have now finally received all sponsorship funds for 2022 and can confirm that the total sum raised or all causes was almost £17,000 with nearly £1100 being received by Yeo Valley Lions. As stated, our designated charity this year was changed from Yatton Guiding to a Lions International appeal to assist Lions Clubs bordering Ukraine in the humanitarian efforts to assist refugees. A payment of £1100 has been forwarded to this appeal.
Thank you so much for your generosity this year, the walk continues to be an excellent way for our local clubs to raise funds for themselves and the Lions Charity. I sincerely hope that you will be able to support us again next year.
Next year's walk has been scheduled for 12 May 2024 and our chosen beneficiary will be Yatton Girlguiding.
The 9th Annual Strawberry Lion Walk took place on the 3rd October 2021 It was a great success with 69 people walking from a number of organisations. They raised money for their own causes and also contributed to the Lions in order for them to continue supporting local charities.
